Click on the above map to enlarge The Arabic writing on the above map is translated into English as follows: "This is the first scientific map of Syria (meaning Phoenicia). It was drawn by the geographer 'Ptolemy' around 150 AD, basing it on the work of 'Arastonis' and 'Marinos' of Tyre. Ptolemy lived in Alexandria. Arab geographers kept his work secret for about six centuries until Europeans transferred it in the fifteenth century. The illustrated copy above is taken from 'Ptolemy' and was printed in Venice around 1590." The Alphabet Code © Karim El-Koussa 2007
